Sohosmile cosmetic dentistry offers teeth bonding as an effective, safe and affordable treatment for repairing chipped or broken teeth. You’ll notice a difference in your smile right away. Cosmetic dental bonding also hides stained teeth and fills in when your teeth are too far apart. Bonding uses a composite resin similar to the composite filling material to repair a cavity, so dental bonding is virtually invisible once it’s been expertly placed in your mouth.

When a SoHo cosmetic dentist like Dr. John Koutsoyiannis of Sohosmile uses dental bonding, the goal is to restore and repair your damaged teeth or to improve the appearance of your smile. During the procedure, Dr. John applies tooth-colored material made out of plastic-like composite resin over the teeth where it’s needed.

Also called teeth bonding, this procedure is usually done in a single visit by a skilled cosmetic dentist. Cosmetic dental bonding is a way to improve the appearance of chipped or broken teeth. It’s a relatively inexpensive method of doing minor dental repairs. It can also be used to close the space between teeth or as a tooth-colored filling for small cavities.

Reasons for Teeth Bonding

You may have several different reasons for wanting to get teeth bonding, and they’re all valid. Talk to Dr. John about your wishes and goals. The high-density composite resin can be shaped and polished as needed to match your surrounding teeth, making it virtually invisible and unnoticeable. This makes dental bonding a good option for:

  • Repairing chipped or cracked teeth
  • Changing the shape of certain teeth
  • Closing the spaces between teeth
  • Improving the look of discolored teeth
  • Supporting and repairing decayed teeth
  • Making teeth look longer

Cosmetic dental bonding is, as the name implies, a cosmetic procedure. But sometimes bonding is required for health-related reasons.

The Dental Bonding Procedure

The cosmetic dental bonding procedure takes about 30 to 60 minutes per tooth. Because it’s so time-intensive, teeth bonding may not be the best option when you need work on many teeth. For each tooth, your SoHo cosmetic dentist:

  1. Uses a shade guide to choose the composite resin color that is most similar to the tooth being repaired
  2. Roughens the surface of the tooth, then coats it lightly with a liquid, both of which help the bonding material stick to your natural tooth
  3. Applies the tooth-colored resin to the tooth and molds it to the desired shape
  4. Uses a blue spectrum light to harden the material
  5. Trims and shapes the hardened resin so that it fits your mouth and your bite

What to Expect Before, During and After

Before the procedure, Dr. John discusses your treatment options with you. You learn the pros and cons of each option, as well as the cost involved. If you decide on cosmetic teeth bonding, he can usually do it right away.

During the procedure, your cosmetic dentist first numbs the area in your mouth, especially if the damage to the tooth being repaired is severe. You shouldn’t experience any pain, but you may experience some sensitivity. Dr. John may ask you to bite down several times while he shapes the resin to fit your mouth. He trims the excess so that the bonding material is smooth and fits your bite perfectly.

After the procedure, you may go through a short adjustment period, but soon you’ll be chewing better — and speaking clearer — than ever before. Follow any special instructions for aftercare, such as not biting hard candy or ice, which you should never do anyway.

For the first 48 hours after the procedure, you may need to avoid foods and drinks that can stain your teeth. But once the bonding process is complete, your previously chipped or broken teeth have been rendered much more aesthetically pleasing. The spaces between teeth that used to bother you are now less noticeable.

Over time, the composite resin can chip. Avoid biting your fingernails or chewing on pens or sharp objects. Cigarette smoke can permanently stain your teeth and the bonding material. With proper care, teeth bonding can last for years.

Is Cosmetic Dental Bonding Right for You?

Dental bonding is usually more cost-effective than dental veneers, which makes bonding a good choice for treating cosmetic concerns on a budget. Another advantage is that bonding doesn’t require your cosmetic dentist to remove as much enamel as when fitting veneers.
