Bone Grafting For Dental Implants

Sohosmile® in NYC recommends dental bone grafting for patients who lack jawbone density. Bone grafting can restore proper jawbone density and serve as a stable foundation for future dental implants. In order to be a candidate for dental implants, you need enough jawbone mass to support the placement of a dental implant. When you lose a tooth, the jawbone may begin to weaken, which gradually worsens over time. Dental bone grafting regenerates the bone beneath your missing tooth so that you may be a candidate for dental implants.

WHAT IS DENTAL BONE GRAFTING?

A dental bone graft procedure treats jawbone loss. You may need to undergo a bone grafting procedure before you can receive a dental implant. A dental bone graft uses bone grafting material and places it in areas of low jawbone density. This bone grafting material promotes the formation of new, healthy bone within the jaw. The process of dental bone grafting occasionally may involve taking a piece of bone from a donor location from another part of your body. But in most cases, a synthetic bone grafting material will be used. Dental bone grafting can take 45-90 minutes under local anesthesia.

There may be several causes of jawbone loss. An untreated gum condition like advanced gingivitis or periodontal disease is the most common reason. Other reasons that lead to jawbone loss include trauma to your teeth, a tooth abscess, and long-term denture wear. Additionally, other common causes for jawbone loss include an infection in the tooth, tooth removal, gum and bone recession, or another complication of the tooth.

THREE COMMON METHODS OF PERFORMING A DENTAL BONE GRAFT
SOCKET GRAFTING
Dental bone grafting material is placed into the deficient socket to replenish your bone. This technique promotes new bone cell regeneration, essentially replacing the lost bone.
RIDGE AUGMENTATION
An effective bone graft surgery to repair severe jawbone loss that encompasses surrounding areas. The graft fills the deficiency in your jaw to restore the original structure of your jawbone.
SINUS LIFT
This procedure can be performed if the sinuses are too close to the upper jawbone. The sinuses are lifted and the bone graft material fills this space.

WHO IS AN IDEAL CANDIDATE FOR DENTAL BONE GRAFTING?

An ideal candidate for dental bone grafting is a patient experiencing low jawbone density. Additionally, patients who need dental implants may also be ideal candidates for dental bone grafting surgery. Prior to receiving a dental bone graft, your periodontist will perform an evaluation of your teeth and jawbone to ensure that there are no additional underlying health concerns. Sohosmile®’s doctors can help determine if you are a candidate for a dental bone graft.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT DURING MY DENTAL BONE GRAFTING PROCEDURE?

Dental bone grafting varies depending on what type of dental bone grafting treatment you are undergoing, the type of bone grafting material used, and the severity of your jawbone loss. During a dental bone grafting surgery, a small incision will be placed, after which dental bone grafting material will then be carefully placed in areas of low jawbone density, possibly using a membrane as well. Stitches will be applied to close the incisions and promote proper healing.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT AFTER MY DENTAL BONE GRAFTING PROCEDURE?

The success of a dental bone graft depends on a combination of factors. The initial recovery time for dental bone graft is quick, and stitches can be removed in 2-3 weeks following your dental bone graft. However, the overall results from a dental bone grafting procedure may take anywhere between 3-9 months depending on the severity of your case. During this time, the dental bone graft completely heals and fuses with your existing bone.

Immediately following a dental bone graft, minor swelling and soreness of the face, jaw, and neck may be expected. An ice pack may be used to ease any discomfort. Pain medication may be prescribed to ease any uncomfortable symptoms following a dental bone graft. Following a dental bone graft, a modified diet will need to be followed to ensure the proper healing of your surgical site. Chewing may be difficult for a few days due to the swelling, so a diet of softer foods is generally recommended. For patients with dentures, the dentures must not be worn for a few weeks until the surgical area heals.
