Missing Tooth Replacement

At Sohosmile® in NYC, we offer dental bridges to replace one or multiple missing teeth and restore a full smile. A dental bridge can take the place of teeth you’ve lost through injuries, such as a sports injury, car accident, or fall or can be used to replace decayed or missing teeth. Dental bridges are a durable missing tooth solution that provide natural-looking results.

A dental bridge is a common solution for missing teeth. When you lose a tooth, you’re left with an empty space in your mouth. Without treatment, it is possible for the neighboring teeth to shift into the empty place where your tooth used to be. Also, your tooth above the missing tooth may move down. This can result in an asymmetrical smile and misalignment of the teeth. By fitting you with a dental bridge, Dr. John Koutsoyiannis introduces a new tooth into your mouth to fill the space. The new tooth keeps the rest of your teeth and your bite properly aligned. A dental bridge can replace one tooth or several missing teeth.

WHAT ARE DENTAL BRIDGES?

A dental bridge is one or more artificial teeth anchored in place between your natural teeth. Neighboring teeth are called abutment teeth, as they act as anchors to secure the dental bridge. Your dental bridge effectively spans the gap of your missing teeth, from one abutment tooth to the next. The artificial teeth between the abutment teeth are referred to as pontics. These teeth are typically made from porcelain for natural-looking results.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A DENTAL BRIDGE AND DENTAL IMPLANT?

A dental bridge is a dental implant alternative that can replace missing teeth without surgery. While dental implants are an excellent treatment for missing teeth, some patients may simply prefer a dental bridge. The main difference between a dental implant and a dental bridge is what anchors your replacement teeth. A dental implant uses a titanium post inserted into the jawbone to act as a stable foundation for your new teeth. On the other hand, a dental bridge uses the neighboring teeth to firmly secure your replacement teeth. Dental bridges require neighboring teeth to be used, while dental implants do not.

Additionally, dental implant surgery can be a longer process, as most cases require 2 separate procedures to complete over the span of 3 to 6 months. Some patients prefer dental bridges, as they can help achieve a fuller smile in a shorter amount of time. Additionally, a dental bridge can be used to replace multiple missing teeth. Dental implants may require a post to be inserted for each missing tooth, which makes it a more invasive procedure. Dr. Koutsoyiannis can help you determine if a dental bridge is right for your individual needs.

WHO IS AN IDEAL CANDIDATE FOR DENTAL BRIDGES?

Ideal candidates for a dental bridge are patients who are looking to treat 1 or more missing teeth. Before undergoing a dental bridge treatment, it is important to be in good oral health. If an oral condition is detected that prevents you from receiving a dental bridge, Dr. John Koutsoyiannis can offer an effective treatment for the underlying dental condition.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT DURING MY DENTAL BRIDGE TREATMENT?

When placing a dental bridge, Dr. Koutsoyiannis will apply a numbing anesthetic to the treatment areas. Neighboring teeth will be recontoured so that the dental bridge will fit securely and comfortably. To recontour a neighboring tooth, your dentist will remove some enamel by slightly filing down your natural tooth so that a bridge can slot over it and replace both this tooth and the missing tooth. This process may require several dental appointments to finish, so you’re provided a temporary bridge while your permanent bridge is being customized. Once your permanent dental bridge is complete, the temporary dental bridge is removed and replaced with your new dental bridge.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT AFTER MY DENTAL BRIDGE TREATMENT?

Following the placement of a dental bridge, there will be a period of adjustment as your mouth acclimates to the dental bridge. Some patients may experience tooth sensitivity, soreness, or changes in sensation when biting, talking, or smiling. These are normal following the placement of a dental bridge. These sensations will quickly fade as you continue to adjust to your new dental bridge. Immediately after receiving a dental bridge, certain foods and drinks may need to be avoided, including hot, cold, spicy, or crunchy items. Special care is required with dental bridges to properly clean them. You will be instructed on how to clean and care for your new dental bridge during your visit.
