Teeth Cleanings

Professional dental cleanings in NYC can remove built-up plaque and tartar on the teeth to ensure a healthy smile. While brushing your teeth at home contributes to a fresh, beautiful smile, routine professional teeth cleanings are needed to maintain the health of your smile. Fresher breath and a whiter, brighter smile are just two benefits of a professional teeth cleaning. Removing plaque and tartar during a professional dental cleaning removes millions of bacteria that live and grow in your mouth. Dental cleanings can improve your overall dental health and reduce the need for future dental procedures by helping to prevent cavities. Dr. John Koutsoyiannis recommends professional dental cleanings 2 to 3 times a year or 4 times a year if you have extensive dental work in your mouth.

WHAT ARE DENTAL CLEANINGS?

Dental cleanings involve the removal of tartar and other bacteria from the tooth surface in order to prevent cavities, gingivitis, or gum diseases. Regular teeth cleanings and exams can prevent serious dental issues from developing. Professional dental cleanings remove plaque, a sticky substance containing bacteria that eats away at the enamel of your teeth. When plaque is left on the teeth, it builds up and hardens into tartar. Professional dental cleanings remove stains and discolorations from the teeth, as well as plaque and tarter. Regular dental cleanings help to prevent periodontal disease from occurring. This has shown to have a link with heart disease in patients, yet another reason to see your dentist frequently for dental cleanings.

Tooth cleanings remove plaque and tartar from above and below the gumline, which can lead to periodontal complications if left untreated. During your NYC dental cleaning, Dr. Koutsoyiannis also checks your overall gum health. If Dr. Koutsoyiannis notices any signs of gum recession or oral disease, he can recommend a dental treatment to achieve proper oral health. Typically, dental cleanings last between 60-75 minutes. For patients who have never had a teeth cleaning or who do not maintain regular cleaning check-ups, a dental cleaning may take longer.

WHO IS AN IDEAL CANDIDATE FOR TEETH CLEANINGS?

All patients are ideal candidates for teeth cleanings. Dental cleanings are an important tool in achieving proper oral health and can help detect an oral disease in its earliest stages. For some patients, a dental cleaning may be combined with another procedure to treat an underlying oral condition. For example, if the dental hygienist or Dr. John detects any signs of gum disease when performing a dental cleaning or oral exam, a customized gum disease treatment plan can be created to treat any symptoms of periodontal disease.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT DURING MY DENTAL CLEANING TREATMENT?

A regularly scheduled cleaning as part of your bi-annual visit is a simple procedure. If a significant amount of plaque or tartar has built up on your teeth — or if there are deep pockets in the gums around your teeth — a deep teeth cleaning is a necessity. During a professional dental cleaning, some people may experience very little discomfort. Teeth cleaning uses a combination of light, targeted water sprays, ultrasonic tools that vibrate, small dental instruments, and polishes to clean the teeth. Once your teeth have been cleaned and polished, they’re flossed and examined.

During a dental cleaning, you may also receive a recommended fluoride treatment. Professional fluoride treatments are stronger than over-the-counter products and protect your teeth from cavities. Fluoride treatments take only a few minutes to administer. Digital dental x-rays are taken when needed in order for Dr. John to be able to diagnose dental issues such as cavities, infections, bone loss, etc. If a cavity is found, a dental filling is used to protect the tooth and clear away any decay.

DO YOU PERFORM SCALING AND ROOT PLANING (DEEP CLEANINGS)?

Our team offers deep cleanings to help battle gum disease. While regular cleanings focus on the areas above the gumline, deep cleanings are performed beneath the gumline. A deep cleaning consists of two steps: scaling and root planing. Dental scaling cleans deep below the gumline, removing plaque and tartar buildup from the teeth and gums. Root planing smooths out root surfaces, which helps prevent bacteria from adhering to the roots of your teeth.
