Cavity Fillings

Dental fillings in NYC are a cavity treatment to restore the health and integrity of the tooth. While cavities are preventable for many people, they can develop due to poor oral hygiene, genetics, diet, and other causes. Dental fillings are used to treat tooth decay, which usually appears when bacteria combine with sugar particles left in your mouth. The result is a substance called plaque that begins to eat away at your tooth’s enamel. This process eventually leads to pits or holes in your teeth that are susceptible to further decay. Once bacteria penetrate your enamel, you may begin to feel pain and are at risk of developing an infection. Dr. Koutsoyiannis offers dental fillings at our New York City office to treat tooth decay and fill cavities.

WHAT ARE DENTAL FILLINGS?

Dental fillings are used to treat cavities, which are permanently damaged areas in the teeth that develop as small holes. Cavities often form from bacteria, excess sugar consumption, and poor oral hygiene. In addition to poor dental hygiene, acid reflux, frequent snacking, and smoking can also contribute to the formation of plaque, tartar, and cavities. Symptoms of a cavity may include sensitivity to cold or sweets, tooth pain, or chewing problems. Routine dental examinations with Dr. John can detect a cavity in its earliest stages so that a more timely treatment can be applied. This can prevent serious and irreversible damage to the tooth from occurring.

The most common material used when performing a dental filling is a composite material. This dental filling material requires less drilling than traditional metal fillings because the material bonds directly to your tooth. Composite cavity fillings are natural-looking and can blend seamlessly with your smile. After the decayed portion of the tooth has been removed, composite material is used to fill this empty space. At Sohosmile®, we use only tooth-colored composite fillings.

WHO IS AN IDEAL CANDIDATE FOR A CAVITY TREATMENT?

The majority of patients are candidates for dental fillings if they have a cavity, as it is a medically necessary procedure to ensure the health of the smile. In some cases, a dental filling may be combined with an additional procedure if another underlying oral condition is detected. Cavity treatment candidates are otherwise healthy individuals who are looking to treat tooth decay and restore a healthy smile. Dr. Koutsoyiannis can help determine if a cavity treatment is right for you.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT DURING MY CAVITY TREATMENT?

To begin a cavity treatment, Dr. John Koutsoyiannis will take x-rays and uses CariVu™ technology to determine the depth of the cavity and assess the surrounding tissue. A local anesthetic will be applied to ensure patient comfort. Dr. Koutsoyiannis will then remove the decayed portion of the tooth. The cavity will then be treated to provide a conditioned surface for the composite filling to bond with. Dr. Koutsoyiannis inserts a protective liner over your tooth’s nerve if the cavity is too close to the root. Next, several layers of composite filling will be built up in the tooth cavity. Dr. Koutsoyiannis uses a blue spectrum light between filling layers to harden them. Finally, Dr. Koutsoyiannis will clean, shape, and polish the composite material to achieve the most natural appearance and functional tooth possible.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT AFTER MY CAVITY TREATMENT?

Following a dental filling procedure, any local anesthesia should wear off within a couple hours. It is best not to eat until the anesthetic has worn off completely. It is normal for patients to feel minor sensitivity or discomfort around the cavity treatment area. Dr. John suggests to chew on the other side of your mouth until it is comfortable again to chew on the tooth that has received a dental filling. As the tooth continues to heal, very cold or very hot foods and drinks should also be avoided. Dr. John will provide detailed instructions to follow after receiving a dental filling.
