Dentures Dentist

Dentures in NYC are completely customized to fit the gums and provide a beautiful, natural-looking smile. Your smile is one of your most important features. Missing teeth can cause your facial muscles to sag, giving you the appearance of being much older. If a patient is missing all of the teeth of the upper jaw, lower jaw, or both, eating, smiling, and speaking can be difficult. Dr. Koutsoyiannis offers full and partial dentures to help repair the smile and restore confidence.

WHAT ARE DENTURES?

Full or complete dentures can replace all the missing teeth of the upper and lower jaws. Partial dentures, on the other hand, are suited for those who may have lost a few teeth due to injury, damage, or periodontal disease. Dentures fill in the spaces of missing teeth and provide a stable, healthy smile. Partial dentures are stationary and attach to your natural teeth and can be removed for cleaning. Full dentures are customized so that they achieve a stable yet comfortable fit along the underlying gum tissue, yet are still removable for cleaning.

Partial dentures allow for maintaining the proper alignment of your existing teeth. This prevents your natural teeth from shifting into an empty space of a missing tooth. Partial and full dentures can maintain your bite and prevent a misaligned smile. For some patients, full or partial dentures may be ideal to fill gaps in the smile and improve the ability to comfortably talk and eat. If dental implants are not an option due to cost or health reasons, dentures are a good middle ground.

WHO IS AN IDEAL CANDIDATE FOR DENTURES?

Ideal candidates for full or partial dentures are individuals looking to replace missing teeth. Before fitting you for dentures, Dr. Koutsoyiannis will evaluate your smile to ensure there are no underlying oral conditions. Dr. Koutsoyiannis may need to remove unhealthy or damaged teeth or perform another procedure to prepare you for your future dentures. It is important to ensure the health of your smile before placing full or partial dentures.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT DURING MY DENTURE PROCEDURE?

Dr. Koutsoyiannis and the highly skilled dental team at Sohosmile® work with you to determine the best option for replacing your missing teeth. Dr. Koutsoyiannis will help you determine if full dentures, partial dentures, or another tooth replacement option is right for you. If tooth extraction or another procedure needs to be performed before receiving dentures, this procedure will be performed separately. You may experience mild-to-moderate discomfort while recovering from a tooth extraction. Discomfort and mild swelling are the most common symptoms and should quickly fade.

To begin creating your customized dentures, a mold of your teeth and smile will be taken. This will allow your future dentures to be made to fit comfortably along your gumline. When your dentures have been created, Dr. Koutsoyiannis will have you try the dentures on to see if they fit comfortably. If needed, denture revisions can be made at this step to create the most comfortable pair of dentures possible. After any readjustments have been made, your dentures will be placed. Modern denture systems are often used in conjunction with dental implants, in order to create better stability and retention.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT AFTER RECEIVING DENTURES?

Following the placement of new dentures, patients will enter an adjustment period where they are acclimating to their new smile. Some patients may notice an increase in saliva production, mild muscle soreness in the cheeks, mild discomfort, and changes in sensations when talking, smiling, or eating. These symptoms are typically minimal and will gradually fade within 1-2 weeks of receiving your dentures.

Taking proper care of your dentures ensures fresh breath and a healthy smile. It is important to clean your dentures daily with a denture-grade cleanser. Any visible signs of food or build-up should be removed during daily cleanings. In addition to cleansing your dentures, it is important to clean your gums, the roof of your mouth, and the other soft tissues in your smile. It is recommended that removable dentures are kept in water or a cleaning solution when not in use. Periodic evaluation of the dentures and denture repairs are typically needed to maintain your smile.

Removable dentures sometimes require an adhesive to eliminate movement and provide a tight seal. When your dentures are secure, you can talk and chew freely and confidently. You can eat almost anything you want without the risk of food particles becoming lodged beneath the dentures. Denture adhesives come in paste and powder form and are easy to apply. Dr. Koutsoyiannis can provide detailed information on long-term denture care following your procedure.
