Emergency Dental Care Services

Our emergency dentist in NYC is able to provide relief from dental emergencies or oral trauma with same-day appointments. Dental problems can happen when you least expect it, and some of these accidents require urgent dental care. When you have a dental emergency or find yourself with tooth pain, a prompt dental procedure may be needed. Dr. John Koutsoyiannis is an NYC emergency dentist offering emergency dental services, such as treating a broken tooth, dislodged dental bridges or dental implants, a crown or dental filling that has fallen out, and more.

WHAT ARE DENTAL EMERGENCIES?

When extreme pain or trauma to the teeth, gums, or jaw occurs, you may need an emergency dentist. A dental emergency is any pain, trauma, or condition of the teeth that requires an urgent treatment. Many patients may need an emergency dentist after a sudden onset of tooth pain, swelling, or discomfort. Patients who have been in an accident or who experienced physical trauma may also need an emergency dentist. Some of the most common dental emergencies that Dr. John treats include sudden toothaches and pain, teeth that have been knocked out or damaged, and oral tissue injuries.

EMERGENCY TOOTHACHE RELIEF

Emergency toothache relief is a common reason for needing urgent dental care. Intense tooth pain may be a sign of an infection, abscess, or other underlying oral condition. These conditions require prompt professional dental care, as they can continue to worsen without treatment. One of the most common causes for an emergency dental visit is an intense throbbing toothache that can radiate to your ear, neck, or jawbone. Some additional symptoms that require an emergency toothache treatment include facial swelling, sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures, increased pain from biting or chewing, swollen lymph nodes in your neck, and a fever.

KNOCKED-OUT TEETH

A tooth that has been knocked out from an accident, a sports-related injury, or a fall is also considered a dental emergency. Our emergency dentist in NYC may be able to reinsert the tooth as long as you take appropriate action after the dental injury. If your tooth has been knocked out, be sure not to touch the root of the tooth and to hold it by the crown. Do not wrap the tooth in paper or cloth because this dries it out, causing further damage. Take the tooth to the sink and cover the drain so the tooth doesn’t accidentally fall into it. Then rinse the tooth off but do not remove any tissue that’s attached to it. The most important step is to keep the knocked out tooth moist at all times. Do not let the tooth sit in tap water. Instead, put it in a small cup of milk or a container of saline water until you see our emergency dentist. Dr. Koutsoyiannis will attempt to save the tooth. If the tooth cannot be saved, Dr. Koutsoyiannis can suggest tooth replacement options.

ORAL TISSUE INJURIES

If your face has been injured in an accident and you’ve suffered tissue damage, such as lacerations, puncture wounds, or tears to your cheeks, lips, tongue, or mouth, and if the injury is severe, please seek immediate medical attention and go to your nearest emergency room. If the injury is not as severe, our emergency dentist can help treat any oral trauma.

WHO IS AN IDEAL CANDIDATE FOR AN EMERGENCY DENTAL TREATMENT?

Candidates for an emergency dental treatment are those who may be suffering from a sudden onset of tooth pain, have had a tooth knocked out, or experienced an accident that has caused oral trauma. Please keep in mind that if this is a true medical emergency, immediately go to your nearest emergency room or dial 911. While Dr. Koutsoyiannis is an experienced emergency dentist in NYC, he can only provide adequate treatment if you are in stable health.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT DURING MY EMERGENCY DENTAL TREATMENT?

The details of an emergency dental treatment vary from patient to patient. Dr. Koutsoyiannis will provide prompt medical attention to your dental emergency and efficiently create an effective treatment plan. Dr. Koutsoyiannis will always try to save a tooth during a dental emergency. If the tooth cannot be saved, our emergency dentist in NYC will attempt to treat any underlying damage. After this, Dr. Koutsoyiannis can perform an emergency tooth replacement treatment. In some cases, patients may need time to adequately heal from a dental emergency before undergoing a tooth replacement surgery.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT AFTER MY EMERGENCY DENTAL TREATMENT?

The length of recovery will depend on what emergency dental treatment you received. For more minor cases, recovery may be only a few days until any discomfort has dissipated. On the other hand, severe cases of tooth damage or oral trauma will require a lengthier recovery time. If any stitches were applied during an emergency dental procedure, our emergency dentist can remove them in 2-3 weeks. Dr. Koutsoyiannis and the doctors of Sohosmile® will provide detailed instructions to follow after receiving a dental emergency treatment.
