Full Mouth Restoration

Full mouth dental implants permanently replace all of the teeth of the upper jaw, lower jaw, or both jaws. When most or all of your teeth are missing or need to be replaced, you may think you need dentures. While dentures are a useful tool, full mouth dental implants may be right for you. An alternative to dentures, full mouth dental implants attach to your jawbone and gums to become a base for dental crowns. Designed to be long-lasting, full mouth dental implants look and function like natural teeth. Full mouth dental implants provide you the ability to bite, chew, and speak clearly. Unlike dentures, full mouth dental implants are not removable and won’t wiggle or come loose while you’re eating or talking.

WHAT ARE FULL MOUTH DENTAL IMPLANTS?

Full dental implants replace all the missing teeth of the upper and lower jaws. Full mouth dental implant surgery promotes a healthy smile and can prevent jawbone loss, which is common when missing teeth go untreated. The dental implant posts act as the roots of your teeth and stimulate your jawbone and gums. Because full mouth dental implants are permanently attached to your jawbone, they don’t require daily removal. Full mouth dental implants offer a comfortable fit and natural bite alignment. Additionally, full mouth dental implants don’t require special care, creams, or adhesives.

WHO IS AN IDEAL CANDIDATE FOR FULL MOUTH DENTAL IMPLANTS?

Ideal candidates for full mouth dental implants are individuals looking to replace all or most of the teeth of the upper and / or lower jaws. Full mouth dental implant candidates must have a healthy amount of jawbone density. If a patient has suffered jawbone loss, dental bone grafting may be recommended. A dental bone graft can promote the generation of new jawbone, ensuring proper jawbone density. Following a dental bone graft, the majority of patients have a sufficient amount of jawbone density to receive dental implants.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT DURING MY FULL MOUTH DENTAL IMPLANT SURGERY?

The first step of full mouth dental implant surgery is to remove any remaining teeth that are hopeless. Full mouth dental implants replace a full set of teeth. Full mouth dental implant surgery is typically completed over the course of several months. This allows time for the process of osseointegration, which is when your dental implants begin to bond with your jawbone. Osseointegration allows for your full mouth dental implants to form a secure, stable base for your future dental crowns. After the placement of full mouth dental implant fixtures, temporary dentures are typically provided while the jaw and mouth heal.

During full mouth dental implant surgery, your oral surgeon will place several dental implants in your jaw slightly above the top of the bone. The dental implant fixtures are covered with gum tissue and will heal for about 3-6 months, depending on your specific case.

After your dental implants have properly healed and integrated with your jawbone, your oral surgeon will place the healing abutments. These posts extend beyond your gumline and allow the gingiva to mature for the dental crowns to come. Your gum tissue needs to heal around the posts for a couple of weeks. In some cases, the implants have the posts attached immediately, eliminating the need for this step. Finally, your abutment-supported dental crowns or full arc of teeth are inserted into position. These will be created custom to exactly fit your mouth. Before you leave with your new teeth, the restorative dentist will ensure proper bite alignment and that the implants fit comfortably and securely.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT AFTER MY FULL MOUTH DENTAL IMPLANT SURGERY?

You may experience some swelling and discomfort after each phase of surgery for full mouth dental implants. These side effects usually last for a few days, and your dental implant surgeon may prescribe pain medication to relieve any discomfort. A modified diet of soft foods is recommended as your gum tissue heals. After your full mouth dental implant procedure, you will be provided in-depth post-operative care instructions. It is important to avoid touching the surgical sites or chewing hard foods as long as your mouth and gums feel tender. You will be instructed to apply an ice pack to the area for 20 minutes at a time to reduce swelling.
