Treatments For Gum Recession

Gum grafting takes healthy gum tissue from either a donor location or uses a dehydrated tissue such as Alloderm and places it in areas that are experiencing gum recession. Gum recession occurs when the gum tissue around the teeth begins to pull away from the tooth. This results in more of the tooth structure and even the roots of the teeth becoming exposed over time. Receding gums can be caused by periodontal diseases, genetics, bruxism (grinding of the teeth), brushing the teeth too hard, tobacco use, and poor oral hygiene. NYC periodontists offer gum grafting to treat gum recession and restore a healthy smile.

WHAT IS GUM GRAFTING?

In some cases, a gum graft procedure involves taking healthy gum tissue from other areas of your mouth and grafting it onto the places where your gums have pulled back from your teeth. For most patients, gum grafts may use donor tissue material and allografting techniques to build up your gums. Gum grafting is sometimes used as part of a gum contouring procedure. By repairing your receding gumline, you protect the exposed roots of your teeth while improving your smile. Protecting your teeth contributes to your overall dental health and prevents future problems. Some of the most common gum graft techniques include allografting, connective tissue grafts, pedicle / lateral grafts, and free gingival grafts.

GUM GRAFTING TECHNIQUES
ALLOGRAFTING TECHNIQUES
This Is Often Used When The Periodontist Needs A Larger Amount Of Graft Tissue. A Gum Allograft Is Gum Grafting Material That Is Generally Taken From A Cadaver Or That Uses Synthetic Materials.
CONNECTIVE TISSUE GRAFT
Connective Tissue Is Removed From The Roof Of Your Mouth And Sutured Onto The Affected Area.
PEDICLE / LATERAL GRAFT
Gum Tissue Comes From The Immediate Area And Is Placed Over Your Receding Gums. This Works Well When You Have Healthy Gum Tissue Surrounding A Receding Gum Line.
FREE GINGIVAL GRAFT
Like A Connective Tissue Graft, The Roof Of Your Mouth Supplies The Tissue, Which Is Grafted To The Receding Gum Line.

WHO IS AN IDEAL CANDIDATE FOR GUM GRAFTING?

Gum grafting candidates are patients who are looking to treat receding gums. Dr. John Koutsoyiannis will perform an extensive oral evaluation to determine if gum grafting is right for you. If an underlying oral condition or structural issue of the tooth is present, treatment will be recommended. Once any underlying condition has been treated, a periodontist can determine if you are a proper candidate for gum grafting surgery.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT DURING MY GUM GRAFT?

The specifics of your gum grafting procedure will vary depending on what type of gum graft you are receiving. To begin your gum grafting procedure, an anesthetic is applied to the treatment area to ensure patient comfort. If you’re undergoing a free gingival graft or a connective tissue graft, the periodontist removes the graft tissue once the source area has been sufficiently numbed. The gum grafting material will then be sutured to your gums. Once the gum grafting procedure is complete, an antibacterial rinse cleans and soothes your mouth.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT AFTER MY GUM GRAFT?

Following a gum graft, it is normal for patients to feel sensitivity or discomfort around the donor site and gum grafting site. These symptoms generally improve within a few days following a gum grafting procedure. The length of your gum grafting recovery will depend on the extent of your gum grafting treatment and your healing rate. As you recover from a gum graft, a modified diet of soft foods is important so that you do not irritate the surgical sites. Over-the-counter pain medication can be taken to improve any discomfort or pain following gum graft surgery. Alcohol and tobacco use must be avoided. In many cases, you will be prescribed an antibiotic mouthwash to reduce the risk of infection. Ice packs can be applied to the jaw to alleviate any discomfort or swelling. Following your gum grafting surgery, the periodontist will provide you with detailed instructions to follow to promote proper healing.
