Laser Teeth Whitening

Laser teeth whitening in NYC can improve the appearance of discolored teeth. The most common cause of teeth becoming dull or stained is the food you have consumed over time. Certain foods and drinks stain the enamel, which is the hard outermost layer of your teeth. Laser teeth whitening can remove stains that over-the-counter teeth whitening products and regular brushing can’t remove. Smoking cigarettes can also stain your teeth. Teeth can look yellow when the dentin shows through the enamel. The dentin is the layer directly underneath the enamel. Yellowing can also occur due to age, genetics, certain medications, poor oral hygiene, and consuming certain foods and/or drinks regularly. To get the best teeth whitening treatment, schedule an appointment with NYC cosmetic dentist Dr. John Koutsoyiannis at Sohosmile®.

WHAT IS LASER TEETH WHITENING?

Laser teeth whitening is an in-office laser-based treatment that can whiten the smile many shades brighter. In the majority of cases, teeth whitening in NYC takes about 60-90 minutes to complete. Laser teeth whitening results last for many months – sometimes years – as long as you care for your teeth at home with a daily oral health routine and you are careful with what you consume. Laser teeth whitening is a safe procedure that does not damage the teeth, as the laser technology used is designed to remove only the build-up in color that has occurred over time and not the tooth structure itself. During laser teeth whitening, a concentrated gel will be carefully placed on the teeth, which will be activated by a laser. The combination of this gel and laser technology removes discolorations and whitens the smile.

It is important not to consume dark-colored foods or drinks for at least 72 hours after any teeth whitening procedure. Some foods and drinks to avoid include blueberries, red wine, coffee, and turmeric. Smoking should also be avoided in the days following your laser teeth whitening treatment.

IS LASER TEETH WHITENING BAD FOR YOUR TEETH?

No, laser teeth whitening is a safe and effective way to brighten the smile. The laser technology used during laser teeth whitening is designed to target particles located in the microtubules of the teeth (pores) that contribute to stains. Laser teeth whitening does not damage the teeth and can remove stains and discolorations from the teeth safely.

HOW LONG DOES PROFESSIONAL TEETH WHITENING LAST?

Results from professional teeth whitening typically last up to a year and a half. Patients who practice proper oral hygiene typically experience a longer period of results from teeth whitening. Patients who regularly enjoy coffee, tea, or red wine may notice their results fade more quickly. Additionally, tobacco use can diminish teeth whitening results. Dr. John Koutsoyiannis typically offers follow-up laser teeth whitening treatments every 1-2 years or a tray whitening “boost” system specifically designed for your teeth.

WHO IS AN IDEAL CANDIDATE FOR LASER TEETH WHITENING?

Ideal candidates for laser teeth whitening are patients struggling to whiten teeth with over-the-counter teeth whitening treatments. Patients with a build-up of stains and discolorations may benefit from laser teeth whitening. To be a candidate for laser teeth whitening, patients should be in good oral health. If you have restorations located in the front of your mouth (smile line), teeth whitening treatments will not whiten these restorations. If an underlying condition is detected that prevents you from receiving laser teeth whitening, Dr. John Koutsoyiannis can provide an alternate treatment. Once your teeth are healthy, Dr. Koutsoyiannis can determine if laser teeth whitening may be right for you.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT DURING MY LASER TEETH WHITENING TREATMENT?

Prior to teeth whitening, Dr. John Koutsoyiannis will evaluate your teeth and gums thoroughly for any underlying problems. If he discovers a gingival issue, you may have to undergo a deep teeth cleaning procedure before the laser teeth whitening. If you have sensitive teeth, Dr. John can provide a topical fluoride gel. Apply it to your teeth as directed for a few days before and / or after the whitening session. During your laser teeth whitening treatment, a protective material covers your lips and gums. This material ensures that only the teeth are targeted by the whitening agents. A hydrogen peroxide layer is used to break up any stains. This treatment is repeated every 10-15 minutes, and it usually takes 2-3 treatments (30-45 minutes total) to achieve the desired whitening results. Most offices only use a heat lamp when whitening in-office. Sohosmile® uses an actual laser to achieve optimal results.

Once your laser teeth whitening treatment is complete, a fluoride gel is applied to your teeth to treat any sensitivity issues if they occur. For the majority of patients, laser teeth whitening is pain-free. In some cases, patients may experience sensitivity following teeth whitening. These symptoms are typically very mild and will fade quickly. Dr. John can provide detailed information on what to expect following laser teeth whitening. At first, your teeth may look unnaturally white, but, within a few days, the color changes to a more natural white. While laser teeth whitening results are long-lasting, patients typically choose to undergo continuing treatments every 1-2 years depending on their lifestyle habits. Dr. John can help you determine when a follow-up teeth whitening treatment may be necessary. Following laser teeth whitening, you should avoid acidic or dark foods and drinks for 1 week for the best results possible.

WHAT ARE TAKE-HOME TEETH WHITENING TRAYS?

At Sohosmile®, we can also fabricate custom-made, take-home trays to use with our prescription-strength whitening gel. Used properly, these trays, which resemble a thin, transparent retainer, can achieve the same results as laser whitening. Getting fitted for your teeth whitening trays takes two 30-minute visits. You will wear the trays filled with the whitening gel every night for the prescribed period.

The advantages of the take-home whitening include convenience and cost. If you use this teeth whitening option, you must wear the trays as recommended. You can re-use the trays in the future; you just need more gel.

For the best teeth whitening results, Dr. John Koutsoyiannis often recommends a combination of laser teeth whitening and using the take-home trays. The laser treatment provides instant whitening, and the trays deliver even more whitening over time. This combination also helps boost your whitening in the future. The initial treatment takes about 90 minutes, and you pick up your trays a few days later.
