What Is Tooth Extraction?

Removal of a tooth may be needed due to a variety of concerns, including tooth decay, advanced gum disease, an infection in the tooth, overcrowding, fractures, or damage from a trauma or accident. Sohosmile® offers simple tooth extractions and surgical tooth extractions.

Simple Tooth Extractions:

A simple tooth extraction can be performed when the tooth is easily visible. A simple extraction is often referred to as pulling a tooth.

Surgical Tooth Extractions:

Surgical extraction of a tooth is required for more complex cases of tooth removal. For instance, if a tooth is not fully visible or easily accessible, surgical tooth extraction may be required. One of the most common forms of tooth extraction surgery is wisdom teeth removal.

Simple tooth extractions and surgical tooth extractions are both highly effective tooth removal treatments. Dr. Koutsoyiannis will always try to treat a tooth before considering tooth removal surgery. When a tooth can’t be saved, tooth removal is recommended so that the tooth does not worsen or cause additional problems. Dr. John Koutsoyiannis can help determine which type of tooth removal is right for you.

Who Is An Ideal Candidate For Tooth Removal?

In the majority of cases, most patients are ideal candidates for tooth removal or tooth extraction surgery. To determine if tooth extraction is right for you, Dr. Koutsoyiannis will perform a thorough oral examination. Dental x-rays will also be taken to assess the severity of tooth decay or damage. With this information, Dr. Koutsoyiannis will determine if the tooth can be saved with tooth removal being the last resort.

What Should I Expect During My Tooth Extraction?

When tooth extraction surgery is performed, anesthesia is applied to ensure patient comfort. The type of anesthesia used during tooth extraction will depend on the severity of your case. During tooth extraction, it is normal for the patient to feel a sensation of pressure in the tooth and jaw. While this sensation may seem surprising, it is completely normal, and the patient should feel no active pain.

After the tooth has been removed successfully, the socket will then be thoroughly cleaned. Stitches will then be applied to the surgical site. Gauze will be applied to control any bleeding following tooth extraction surgery. You will be supplied with additional gauze that you can use following tooth extraction.

What Should I Expect After My Tooth Extraction?

After tooth extraction, you will be able to return home to rest. If you had just one tooth removed in a simple extraction, your recovery is likely very short. On the other hand, if you underwent wisdom teeth removal or if more than one permanent tooth was removed in a surgical extraction, you may need to take it easy for a few days. Before you experience swelling, we recommend that you apply an ice pack for up to 20 minutes at a time. A diet of soft foods is generally recommended for the first few days.

Over-the-counter medications can alleviate most pain or discomfort following tooth removal. An antiseptic mouthwash is sometimes prescribed that will promote proper healing and reduce the risk of infection at the surgical site. Following tooth removal surgery, your oral surgeon will provide you with in-depth post-operative care instructions.
