Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Wisdom teeth removal in NYC is performed to extract partially impacted, fully impacted, or painful wisdom teeth. The wisdom teeth are the 3rd molars at the back of the mouth and are the last teeth to emerge. Wisdom teeth often do not have enough room to emerge through the gums properly. This can cause pain and uncomfortable symptoms to develop. While some wisdom teeth may emerge without issue, the majority of patients do not have enough space in their mouth to accommodate these teeth. It is often suggested to remove wisdom teeth even if they do not currently cause pain in order to avoid future complications and the need for more extensive surgery down the line.

WHAT IS WISDOM TEETH REMOVAL?

Wisdom teeth removal is a form of tooth extraction that treats partially and fully impacted wisdom teeth. When a tooth is impacted, it means it is unable to properly emerge through the gums. If a tooth has not emerged at all, it is referred to as a fully impacted tooth. On the other hand, if the tooth has begun to emerge from the gumline, it is known as a partially impacted tooth. Even wisdom teeth that fully emerge from the gumline can still cause various complications. Wisdom teeth can result in misalignment of the teeth and jaw, jaw pain, stiffness, swelling, and infections. In more severe cases, wisdom teeth can even cause cysts, jawbone damage, or nerve damage.

BENEFITS OF WISDOM TEETH REMOVAL
Alleviates Painful Symptoms
Decreases The Risk Of Severe Oral Conditions

Improves Overall Oral Health
Lowers Risk Of Cysts & Infections

WHO IS AN IDEAL CANDIDATE FOR WISDOM TEETH EXTRACTION?

An ideal candidate for wisdom teeth extraction is a patient who is looking to treat wisdom tooth pain, or remove their wisdom teeth to avoid problems later. Wisdom tooth removal is recommended for many patients, even if painful symptoms have yet to develop. In many cases, wisdom tooth extraction can be performed preemptively to avoid the development of any painful symptoms later on in life. Wisdom tooth removal is generally performed in late adolescence or early adulthood. Wisdom tooth surgery can also be performed later in life if complications arise.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT DURING MY WISDOM TEETH SURGERY?

During wisdom tooth removal surgery, x-rays will be taken in order to determine the exact location and trajectory of your wisdom teeth. This allows your oral surgeon to properly plan the details of your specific wisdom teeth removal surgery. While it is possible to only remove 1 or a few wisdom teeth, oral surgeons generally recommend removing all 4 wisdom teeth at once so that there is no risk of developing future symptoms and having to undergo wisdom tooth removal again.

Wisdom teeth removal surgery is sometimes performed through IV sedation to ensure patient comfort. In most cases, simple local anesthesia can be used during wisdom tooth removal surgery. If the wisdom teeth are impacted, an incision will be made in the gumline in order to access the teeth. In the majority of cases, wisdom tooth removal can be performed in under an hour. In more severe cases, our surgeon may need additional time to extract the wisdom teeth. After the wisdom teeth have been extracted, stitches will be applied to any incisions to ensure proper healing.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT AFTER MY WISDOM TEETH SURGERY?

Following wisdom tooth removal surgery, it is important to rest for the remainder of the day. If general anesthesia was used, patients will need to rest until the anesthesia has fully left their system. It is important not to brush your teeth for the first 24 hours following wisdom tooth removal surgery, as this can irritate the surgical sites. An antiseptic mouthwash is sometimes prescribed which will promote healing and reduce the risk of infection as you heal. A modified diet of soft foods will have to be followed as you heal from wisdom teeth surgery. Additionally, it is important that you do not drink out of a straw, as this can compromise the health of your sutures.

Sutures can be removed 2-3 weeks following your wisdom teeth removal surgery. While the majority of discomfort usually dissipates after 1 week following wisdom tooth extraction surgery, it is normal for patients to experience slight sensitivity at the back of the mouth for the first couple of weeks. Your oral surgeon will provide you with detailed post-operative care instructions and answer any questions you may have about wisdom teeth removal surgery.
